Understanding eScripts

Updated: Mar 8, 2024

What's an eScript?

An eScript is a digital version of a traditional paper prescription. It appears in the form of a QR code, or an electronic token. If you choose an eScript, your doctor will send a unique 'token' directly to your mobile phone or email. This token is then presented at your pharmacy in-person or electronically via an app, website or email to get your medicine.

How to get an eScript?

Your doctor can send you an eScript token either via an SMS or email. Make sure your contact details are up-to-date to prevent any confusion.

An eScript link opens up a QR code with a few essential details about your script.

Each medication generates its own unique token. If you're taking multiple medications (e.g., five), you'll receive five tokens. This can start to get messy and clutter your inbox / SMS.

This is where Scripty can help you sort your eScripts!

Repeats and eScripts

If your prescription includes repeats, your pharmacy will issue a new token each time you collect a medicine. Much like paper scripts, where you get a new paper script printed out and stapled to your original script.

Scripty automatically marks your dispensed scripts inactive to avoid confusion, but remember to add your new repeat tokens!

Benefits of eScripts

  • Convenience: Your ePrescription is just a tap away especially when you are using Scripty

  • Safety: Reduced risk of losing or misplacing prescriptions.

  • Flexibility: Ideal for those prioritising convenience, frequent travelers, and people using multiple pharmacies.

  • Environmentally Friendly: Cuts down on paper usage

Challenges with eScripts

Depending on your doctor, pharmacy, and number of scripts, managing eScripts might be challenging. That's where Scripty shines, neatly organising all your scripts in one dedicated app.

Paper or eScripts?

Paper prescriptions are still valid, but the format remains the same throughout the prescription duration, including repeats. If your doctor provided you with a paper script, your pharmacist cannot issue you an eScript.

Safety of eScripts

eScripts are secure. Upon viewing, you'll only see essential details. Once you add it to Scripty, we ensure it’s stored securely. For software vendors handling eScripts, they should be conformant to the Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) requirements and appear on the ADHA Electronic Prescribing Register of Conformance like Scripty. You should always check if your medication management app is on the register.

Freedom of pharmacy choice

You're free to take your eScript token to any pharmacy. Look out for the ordering feature coming soon to Scripty.

How eScripts work

  1. Receive eScript: Your doctor will send you a text message or email containing a link to a unique QR code, known as an eScript token.

  2. Add eScript into Scripty: Tap on the link or use our 'Smart Import' feature to add multiple eScripts into Scripty effortlessly.

  3. Ready for your medication?

  • In person: Visit your pharmacy and present the QR code in Scripty for scanning. For multiple scripts, use Scripty's Scan and Swipe feature to line up all your scripts for scanning.

  • If your pharmacy offers online ordering, send them the eScript directly. Watch out for our upcoming ordering feature!

  1. Pharmacist dispenses medication: The pharmacist will scan the QR code or look up your token to retrieve your script's details and then dispense the medication.

  2. Manage Repeat Scripts: If your script has repeats, you'll receive a new token via SMS or a print-out. Remember to promptly add this new token back into Scripty.

Sending someone on your behalf?

You can share your token with someone who can collect your medicine, much like a paper prescription. In Scripty, you can long press on the eScript to share it.

Lost Your eScript?

Contact your doctor or the pharmacy that issued your eScript token.

Active Script List (ASL) / My Script List (MySL)

The ASL/MySL allows you to view all your current electronic prescriptions in one secure location. With your permission, pharmacies can access your prescriptions directly, eliminating the need to manage individual tokens.

You’ll soon be able to view your MySL in the Scripty app!

How to set up an ASL

Your pharmacy can help set up an ASL. All you need to do is consent via an SMS text.

Your Privacy and Control

You control who sees your ASL. Only healthcare providers you've given explicit permission to can access it.
